Protecting the public from unqualified therapists is a challenging task, because CBT Therapist is not a protected title; this means that anybody can call themselves a CBT Therapist, and anybody can say they provide CBT. You should always check the credentials of a therapist...
The British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) is the lead organisation for CBT in the UK and Ireland, BABCP aims to promote the practice, theory and development of CBT and to protect the profession. In order to be accredited by BABCP CBT Therapists need to meet strict criteria. These include being a member of a specified core profession, following minimum training standards, having a sustained commitment to the theory and practice of cognitive and behavioural therapies and maintaining appropriate supervision arrangements. It is important to choose an accredited CBT therapist who has proven experience in using CBT techniques in therapy and you can check whether your therapist is fully accredited by checking the CBT Register here
